ProvidenceJournal the ProJo
Also known as ProJo, the ProvidenceJournal is the daily newspaper
that covers the Providence area in Rhodes Island. This daily that is
now the largest newspaper in Rhode Island was first published in 1829
under the original name of The Providence Daily Journal.
It was only in 1920, that the “daily” from the title was
dropped, and it simply remained The ProvidenceJournal. In 1863, besides
the daily Providence issue it also started publishing an afternoon paper
called The Evening Bulletin.
The publishing of the Evening Bulletin was interrupted in 1922, and
“bulletin” was appended to the title of the newspaper: The
ProvidenceJournal-Bulletin. It was only in 1998 that the title was
shortened back to The ProvidenceJournal.
The ProvidenceJournal wrote the history of American journalism as
it is the oldest newspaper published without cessation in the United
States. A crowning of its value came with the four Pulitzer Prices the
ProvidenceJournal won over time.
