BirminghamNews Historical Paper
The BirminghamNews appeared at a time of historical turmoil, right
in the aftermath of the American Civil War. Founded by Rufus Rhodes,
in 1888, it was a very small four-page paper with a low budget. Previously
working for the Herald, Rhodes had the journalistic knowledge and the
courage to set out on his own.
In two years time, The BirminghamNews became “the prophet”
of Birmingham, as Rhodes used to say. In a very short time, it became
the largest daily in Alabama and it grew to reach a 17,000 circulation
in 1909. The bias of the paper was highly Democratic as it supported
progressive issues such as prohibition.
All of Rhodes successors made a step further into making the BirminghamNews more outstanding. A change of headquarters with better facilities
is a speaking proof of the financial power the BirminghamNews has acquired
in 2006. Since 2005, when the Post-Herald ceased publication, the News
Birmingham remained the city’s only daily newspaper.
