In order to meet the growing demands of the market, and facing serious
international competition particularly from BBC, CNN made a move a daring,
yet risky move with the creation of a sports channel.
CNNSports Illustrated or CNN/SI abbreviated was created as 24-hour sports
news channel to the great delight of sports lovers all over the world.
Launched in 1996 CNNSports Illustrated brought together two brands
CNN and Sports Illustrated.
Considered one of the most reliable and comprehensive sports news channel
CNN Sports covered news from the country and from all over the world,
from a variety of sports and major sports events.
However CNNSports Illustrated had the major disadvantage of being launched
at the same time with ESPNEWS. It only reached 20 million homes, which
was a killer for sponsors, and led to its downfall.
No longer operating as CNNSports Illustrated channel since 2002, sports
news are an integrated significant part in CNN reports, not to mention
the CNNSports Illustrated web page daily updated with fresh live sports
news.
